I've found a '78 240D 4 speed with manual everything in Topaz Brown. Price is very good but the car needs some work. It has been sitting since '95 but it has documentation going back to '78. No rust anywhere, just some faded paint that needs some loving and an engine that needs a going over.
I can afford it so, should I do it?

What kind of work does it need? Nevermind. Yes. You should do it.

Yes, just mentally prepare yourself for speeds only obtained by snails in a glue trap.

This may be a lie: my younger brother got a ticket in a '78 240d manual for 80 in a 65.
OTOH, I have no idea how.
I got up to 83 in a VW Rabbit diesel, once - downhill.

If you can fix it, do it.
The 240d is one of my all time favorite "stealth fun" cars. In other words, it shouldn't but fun but somehow is.
The nice thing about them is that they're the perfect speed for "i'm going to drive this slow car completely flat-out all of the time." When done correctly, you still end up going a little bit faster than the rest of the traffic on the street. Rewarding! However you will NOT be going fast enough to get in trouble for speeding or for being particularly reckless.
The four speed manual is direct and accurate with nice positive feel and the skinny tires mean that you can play around on the limits of grip.
Honestly, really one of my more favorite cars to drive. And I have been DDing a 350Z for the past 8 years, so it's not like I just think it's fun because i've never driven a sports car.

That is an accomplishment indeed. I've cruised on the highway at 75 in my 240d but I was miles until I attained that speed.
I meant more of the level of acceleration. Should have been more clear.

"I meant more of the level of acceleration."
Well, yes: granted.

this isn't my first 240D 4 speed. The automatics are actually pretty anemic compared to the 4 sped cars. The 64 hp engine and the 4 speed make for a rather "peppy" combination.

God I wish mine was a manual. Maybe when the trans goes I'll do a manual swap.

CP? I think not

interior is immaculate, well best I have seen. The chrome trim needs to be redone but the wood is perfect and so is the dash. Paint needs a buff and the left front fender has some cracking in the paint. Engine supposedly has low compression and it's not dirty, just oxidized
No rust that I can see. I'll probably strip the undercarriage and clean it, rebuild the suspension and make sure everything is so clean you can eat off of it.

Cosmetics are probably no big deal but low compression might make me pause. I guess it depends on how cheap. My w115 had so much blow by that I had to add a quart at every fill up, but I only paid $500. I think the om616 was updated to a whopping 72 horses for the w124, but with lowered compression it might feel like only 65 or less. Plus harder starts.

the w124 never got the OM61x series engine. They were a modern chassis and received a modern engine, the OM60x series.
I'm not afraid of low compression. I'm going to play with it and probably pull the engine and rebuild it if it needs it. Everything that was once cadmium plates will be plated once again. I love me some cadmium plating.

Sounds like a project. Hope you have fun with it. I meant w123 in my previous post, but fat fingered w124. w123 240D was updated to the OM616.912 with 72hp according to wikipedia.

it's all good. This is a '78 so it's going to be the older 616 with 64 or 67 Hp. Turn the AC on and experience the glacial acceleration!
